Anna is a single mum who along with her 8-year-old son Anders moves to a flat on the 7th floor of a grim anonymous Oslo tower block to escape the violent and cruel attentions of her estranged husband. Although closely monitored by Social Services she still does not feel that Anders and her are completely safe. Visiting a local electrical supermarket she decides to purchases a baby call alarm to monitor the child whilst he’s sleeping. It’s while visiting the shop that she strikes up a friendship with the shy, nervous but kindly shop assistant Heige. Anna’s paranoia intensifies when the call alarm picks up strange child like cries that appear to emanate from another apartment in the tower block!
The Norwegian psychological thriller Babycall (2012), also
known as Monitor, is directed and
written by Pal Sletaune and stars the marvellous Noomi Rapace (Dragon
Tattoo Trilogy 2009, Prometheus
2012) who is totally convincing as Anna, portraying the gradually worsening
paranoia of a distraught mother who is terrified of loosing her only child. Kristoffer
Joner, who played Brathen the sexual predator in King
of Devils Island (2010) is Heige. A very well made and intriguing story that’s
seen entirely through Anna’s eyes. It manages to impart its chronicle of effective
unease without being showy in any why, but contains a whole dose of red
herrings and false turns that keep you on the edge of your seat.
