The Disappearance of Alice Creed

You must watch this film!!!!!

The strength of J Blakeson debut feature (he co-wrote The Descent Part 2) is in its detail, for example how does a kidnap victim, handcuffed and tied to a bed; go to the toilet, this well paced British thriller The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009) explains all!

Vic, apparently the domineering and cold character and the supposedly passive and caring Danny, the younger of the two ex-cons, carry out an immaculately planned kidnap after targeting Alice Creed the rich daughter of a successful business man. They incarcerate her in a sealed and soundproofed flat, but Alice, although appearing to be at her abductors mercy, is not quite the passive victim she at first appears to be.

This well paced three hander has classy performances from Gemma Arterton as Alice, Eddie Marsan as Vic and Ken Loach discovery Martin Compston as Danny. Blakeson’s very well worked movie introduces some very skilful twists and turns. The horror of the situation in my opinion is in the claustrophobia that Alice suffers with a ball gag attached to her mouth and bag over her head for a good deal of screen time. Thankfully the odd touch of good humour lifts the grim proceedings, but the violence involved is consistent with the plot and in no way over done. With its minimal release in the cinema it could be another cult film in the making. The DVD is released at the beginning of October.
